Session 42: Attacking the Lord
General Summary
The party wakes up with Timble going to the wrong door at first. Then they go downstairs to get something to eat.
When there, Magnar notices 5 guards talking to the innkeeper and he points to the party. The guards come over to check them out and Arne casts a minor spell on Archi's staff to make sparks appear on it. This gets the guards attention, and he queries them more.
Timble casts a spell in secret to cause a minor illusion in the inn and the guards shut the place down because there appears to be 'witchcraft' at play.
They persuade the guards that they are simple adventurers and they can help the lord out with work and getting the info that Archi's friend is still alive in the mansion.
He goes off to speal to Lord Geoffrey, and returns about an hour later. Taking them to the mansion, he leads them to where Geoffrey is seated, and Morwenna is seen standing at a door leading to the back.
Geoffrey asks them to come forward, and he tells them if they want to hunt down witches he will pay them. He does mention that he his also looking two in particular, Archibald and Tedha. The former has a limp and fled to Frankia, and the latter is in the west. 150 gold for each killed and 300 gold each if brought back alive for them to fight in a fighting pit he has below the mansion.
Archi gets nervous, and nearly gives himself away with Magnar speaking up. He tells Geoffrey that Archi's name is actually Artichoke and named after his grandfather who grew that vegetable.
Archi also, Archi can go back to Morwenna's room to work on a potion, and Archi nearly drops himself in it again by asking if the Lord is married. Geoffrey looks horrified and asks if Archi is "One of those Sodomites?". Talking his way out he quickly goes back with the group to Morwenna's room.
On the way out, Timble notices that the rooms seem to have Witches Marks and bits of copper driven into the walls, roof, and floor.
When in Morwenna's room, there is a large cauldron on a fire in the centre, tables beyond it covered in different items, and a cage in each corner diagonally from the door.
Archi starts to make his potion, Magnar looking round, and the other two start to look around. Timble hits the side of the cauldron with his spear and the head of one of the hanged witches from the day before, rises to the surface. Timble then starts looking at all the items spread around and sees Morwenna is writing in a book and staring at Archi.
Arne is messing around knocking things over and making a mess. It's also noticed the iron cages have copper wire over them, and there is Witches Marks everywhere in them, but none in the rest of the room.
Timble looks at the book but doesn't understand it. Arne does the same and uses Comprehend Language to read it. It says that Morwenna thinks she may have found Archi, and to contact Adalwolf, but hasn't heard anything from Granny Barrowbye in some time.
Arne deliberately tries to knock over a candle onto the book, but Morwenna notices and angrily asks him to watch himself.
Archi finishes the potion and forces Magnar to drink it. Afterwards Magnar coughs on it, and a burst of flames comes out. This enrages Morwenna more, and she starts to let slip what she looks like.
She advances on Magnar, who breathes fire on Morwenna twice, severely injuring her. Eventually they can see that she is some type of exceptionally ugly Hag, with grey blue skin, and wet hair with seaweed in it. Timble gets his spear out and charges in wounding her. Archi touches the cauldron and blasts Morwenna with a Lightning Blast killing her.
While this is going on, Arne examines the cages and the first one has someone in it hiding under rags and uses a found bottle of acid on the lock & bars, opening the cage. The other is empty.
Afterwards, they go to the cage and examine the person who is now lightly moaning. It turns out to be Braga, the member of Archi's Coven. From there they look for a way out.
Arne tries the cauldron knocking some of the liquid out. Timble notices it trickle to a point under a table and a small breeze goes over the top of it.
Pushing the table out of the way, he finds a part of the floor that looks different with a rope attached hidden between the boards. Getting the rope he works it out, and opens a trapdoor. A part of the wall has been modified so as to tie the rope to without being noticed.
Arne grabs a chest and the group make their way down a rickety ladder to a long thinnish cavern where they smell sea air and see a point of light in the distance. Eventually arriving down to the entrance, it seems the cavern was naturally occurring and used by Morwenna. A sunken ship is just of the coast with it's mast poking out to show where it crashed.
They open the chest and find gold coins, 3 emeralds, 3 ivory statues, 2 rings and 1 necklace.
