Session 97.a: Into the Mountains Report

General Summary

Anselma & Owle waken up and get set to leave to spy on Owle's village. Getting a couple of horses from the stables with Owle getting a yellowish tan horse.   Travelling roughly southwest past the local mine, and Goblintown, they make it as far as the path leading to where the lake south of the village. Owle slips off and kills a goat, takes the skin, meat, and skull. Places the skull on a tree, and smokes the meat & skin.   After getting on the road again they quickly make their way to the plain with the lake and find the valley opening.   They tied the horses to a tree with food & water, then travelled on the snowy, icy & mucky entrance getting to a bit that allowed them to climb up. Owle tried the area to see if there was any protections here in place but there are none (he threw a snowball a small distance).   Getting up they can see what looks like smoke & artificial structures in the distance. Sensing it might be dangerous, they snuck up forward and saw hooded armoured people dressed in dark clothing. Some banners are hung around, with a design on both them and on the people of related designs involving a upsidedown triangle & a cross.   A man is seen dressed as a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Also, there is new buildings with Italian design and a cathedral built. Happened over a 2 year period. Anselma noticed the designs.   Closer still, they soon see a main street, and both spread along it, and other areas has crucifed skeletal remains. Owle recognises his family as suffering this fate.   The cardinal walked down the main street surrounded by 10 armed men, and two priests. He brings out a book, speaks in Latin, stabs the book, and throws it out of town, landing on a snowbank.   The book looks like Owle's father's journal, and Anselma manages to sneak over and grab it.   Owle reads it saying thathis family loved him, and was going to see if Owle needs help with the elders. Also, they had a visitor 6 months before the last entry. A Tiefling had visited to see if they would join the Anti-Pope Black Pope organisation but was refused. She threatened that they would suffer and believed to have damaged the magical protections of the town.   Then the group attacked killing everyone.   They make their way home, noticing the goat skull had been damaged when a cave bear investigated the campsite after smelling the blood. Also they noticed a few goblins near the edge of Goblintown in a brawl, that quickly ended.   Arriving in town, they get settled, with Owle reading the journal, and falling asleep. Anselma went to Father Tossil, with drawings she made & information. He is able to tell her that the group is the worst of the worst. They are members of the Ulmist Inquisition, and are THE fanatical members of a fanatical organisation, along with two priests of the Church of Ezra. The cardinal has the surname of Machiavelli, a notorious family from Italy who are ambitious & dangerous in the worst ways.   Then she goes for some rest.
