Negation
4-level Abjuration
Casting Time: 1 reaction
Range/Area: 30'
Components: Verbal
Duration: Immediate
If the magician or another creature within 30' is the target of any attack (magical or mundane), the magician can attempt to negate the damage and any other effects associated with taking damage (e.g. blindness associated with the Sunbeam spell). The magician does need to know where the attack came from, as a sixth sense allows the magician to respond to the the moment of imminent damage.
The caster and the opponent make opposed rolls, with the magician making a spell attack roll against the opponent's attack roll/spell attack roll (whichever is appropriate). On a succes no damage is dealt. On a failure, damage is dealt as normal.
If the spell is an area effect attack (e.g. fireball) the DC of any relevant savings throw is used.
If the attack roll was a critical hit, the magician makes 2 opposed rolls:
- if both are successful no damage is dealt
- if both are unsuccessful full damage is dealt
- if only one is successful, damage is reduced to a normal roll
Even on a failed savings throw, the magician reduces the damage dealt by 2x magician's proficiency bonus.
