Overmastery

5-level Abjuration

Casting Time: 1 reaction
Range/Area: 30"
Components: Verbal
A magician interrupts a spell taking effect within 30".   If the spell is of 3rd Level or lower, it is overmastered and has no effect. If the spell is of 4th Level or higher, the magician makes an ability check using hir spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a success, the spell is overmastered and has no effect.   A magician has one of 3 options with an overmastered spell:

  1. Quash and discard the spell, harmlessly sending its energy back to the universe
  2. Cast it as part of zis next action, using an available spell slot of sufficient level. If this is a spell that the magician normally has access to, the spell can be cast using a higher level spell slot with any associated benefits. If this spell is not normally available to the magician it can be cast using a higher level spell slot but will not gain any of the advantages of being cast using the higher level spell slot
  3. Cast it as part of zis actions on a later turn. To hold the spell to cast in a later turn, the magician must make a n ability check using zis spellcasting ability before casting. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level + 4 per additional turn the magician wishes to master the spell. A failure results in the spells failure and loss of an action for the magician in the relevant turn
At higher levels: At Higher Levels: When a magician casts this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the interrupted spell is overmastered if its level is two levels less or lower to the level of the spell slot used.
